Rockfield has a strong focus on job safety and efficiency, resulting in a high level of on-site professionalism that is backed up with comprehensive, documented pre-planning, work and safety procedures. The following sections provide further details regarding each of the measurement services listed above.
Force Measurement
It is often necessary to gain an understanding of operational loads for purposes such as determining operational stresses in components, determining the scope for a component re-design, optimising power requirements and quantifying dynamic load spikes.
RTA has a wide range of load cells available, ranging in capacity from 5kg to 100t and can facilitate the recording of high frequency data across numerous input sensors.
Ultra-Sonic Thickness Measurement
Ultrasonic thickness measurement provides an ideal platform for assessing and monitoring thickness in pipes, tanks and other industrial applications where access to both sides of components is not possible. Monitoring of material thickness is particularly important in situations where corrosion can lead to environmental polluting spillages or a loss of structural integrity.
RTA can facilitate on-site thickness measurement for a wide range of materials including metals, ceramics plastics and glass. Thicknesses that can be assessed range from one millimeter to well over a meter. Specific applications include heat exchanger tubing, rolls, pressure vessels, machined parts, flanges, bridges, ship hulls/decking storage tanks, boilers, rails, steam lines and castings.
Stress/Strain Measurement
Rockfield Technologies Australia Pty Ltd is proficient in the measurement of operational stresses through the use of strain gauging methods. Stress/strain measurement can assist with understanding remnant structural capacity in the presence of corrosion or other age-related deterioration mechanisms, trouble-shooting equipment failures, assessing prototype designs and validating engineering calculations and assumptions.
With particular expertise in concrete and metal applications, RTA can facilitate reliable stress/strain measurements with numerous input sensors and across a wide frequency spectrum.
Rain-flow Fatigue Life Measurement
As an extension to our strain gauging capabilities, Rockfield Technologies Australia Pty Ltd can estimate the fatigue life of structural connections and components through the use of sophisticated rain-flow counting software. Rain-flow analysis involves live processing of strain gauge data to produce a histogram of the number of cycles (or counts) of stresses of varying magnitudes. Through combining this measurement output with in-house calculation tools (that are based on Australian and International metal fatigue Standards), RTA can provide accurate information regarding the expected service life of welded connections and structural details.
Structural Deflection Measurement
RTA utilises precision, robust MTS Linear Voltage Displacement Transducers (LVDTs) to measure deflections of structures and machine components. With an available resolution of 0.01mm and a wide range of sensor travel, this service is suited to a wide range of applications, from measuring minute deflections in concrete structures, to identifying discrepancies in machine linkage systems resulting from wear and tear.
